After our Signature Spotlight on the Estes Valley Library became one of our most popular features, viewers kept suggesting we visit Cliffhanger next. We spent a morning in the store with one of the Friends of the Library Foundation board members, and what we found is a story worth sharing.

Three Things to Know About Cliffhanger Used Books

Before we dive into the full story, here are the three most important things to understand about this Estes Park gem:

•       1. Every dollar supports the library: Cliffhanger is a nonprofit used bookstore operated by the Friends of the Library Foundation. All books are donated, the store is run by volunteers, and proceeds fund programs at the Estes Valley Library.

•       2. The prices are remarkable: Most books sell for a fraction of retail price. Children's books are a dollar, the bargain room offers four books for a dollar, and weekly and monthly specials sweeten the deal even further.

•       3. The location could not be easier: You will find Cliffhanger right beside the Post Office on West Riverside Drive in downtown Estes Park, with convenient parking now that the Downtown Estes Loop project is complete.

A Bookstore Born from Community Ingenuity

Cliffhanger's origin story says a lot about how things get done in Estes Park. For years, the Friends of the Library and the Library Foundation, which later merged into a single organization, held large used book sales to raise money for the library. The biggest sale happened each summer at a local hotel, drawing crowds and moving thousands of donated books.

Eventually, the organization faced a challenge. The free venue was no longer available, and storage space for the thousands of donated books had run out. Right at that moment, a building near the Post Office came up for sale. It had previously housed a printing shop, and someone on the board had an idea: why not open a bookstore?

The Friends of the Library Foundation purchased the building, and volunteers rolled up their sleeves to transform it into the welcoming bookstore you see today. Here is the clever part of the model: apartments upstairs generate rental income that covers the building's mortgage. That means the money from book sales flows directly to library programs rather than overhead.

Every Purchase Supports the Estes Valley Library

The sustainability of this model is what makes Cliffhanger so special. Every book on the shelves was donated, most by local residents. Volunteers process each donation, enter it into inventory, and shelve it for the next reader to discover. There is a second service Cliffhanger provides that often goes unnoticed. If you have ever thought about volunteering in Estes Park, this is one of the most approachable opportunities in town:

•       Shifts are just two hours, once a week

•       Winter hours run 10 AM to 4 PM, and summer hours run 10 AM to 6 PM

•       The work is a friendly mix of helping guests, making recommendations, working the register, and keeping the shelves looking great

As one volunteer put it, anybody can do two hours. It is a small commitment with a meaningful impact on our library and our community.
