Signature Dish: The Sandwich Mafia Estes Park | Family Recipes, Homemade Pizza, and Rat Pack Vibes

If you are looking for authentic Italian food in Estes Park, you need to find your way down the alley off Elkhorn Avenue to The Sandwich Mafia. Tucked away at 100 Cleave Street in downtown Estes Park, this family-owned Italian deli serves up homemade pizza, overstuffed subs, and cannoli made from scratch. It is one of those places that feels like a well-kept secret, even though the locals have known about it since it opened in 2020.

We recently sat down with owner Lisa Williams to learn the story behind the restaurant, taste some of their most popular dishes, and find out what makes The Sandwich Mafia one of the most unique dining experiences in our mountain community. This is our latest episode of the Signature Dish series on the Estes Park Living YouTube channel, where we spotlight local restaurants and the people behind them.

A Family Legacy: How The Sandwich Mafia Came to Be

The Sandwich Mafia is not just a restaurant. It is a tribute to family, heritage, and the kind of food that brings people together. Owner Lisa Williams grew up around the meat packing business. Her father, Charles Machado, was a butcher who knew cuts of meat with his eyes closed. When her parents followed her to Estes Park, the idea of opening an authentic Italian deli became a shared dream.

Lisa and her family signed the lease in December 2019 and opened right as COVID hit in 2020. Not exactly ideal timing for a brand-new restaurant, but they made it through when many businesses did not. Sadly, Lisa's father passed away just before the grand opening and never got to see the finished restaurant. But his presence is everywhere. The logo is a cartoon character of Charles Machado, and Lisa says he giggled when he saw it. The restaurant honors his memory, Lisa's grandmother's recipes, and the Italian heritage that shaped their family.

When asked where the name came from, Lisa shared that she wrote a long list of options and had friends and family weigh in. Names got crossed off one by one. Sandwich Mafia was the last one standing.

The Food: Homemade Sauce, Generous Portions, and Grandma's Recipes

What sets The Sandwich Mafia apart from other places to eat in Estes Park? It starts with the sauce. Lisa learned to make it the traditional way from her grandmother, and that homemade sauce is the foundation of every pizza on the menu. As Lisa puts it, you can put anything on a pizza you want, but if the sauce is not good, the pizza is not good.

The portions are generous, too. Lisa's philosophy is simple: they do not need to get rich. They want people to be happy. The cannoli are Lisa's personal homemade recipes, developed through taste testing and perfecting. She wishes her grandmother could taste them.

Top Three Menu Items (According to Lisa):

The Rat Pack Pizza: Pepperoni, salami, black olives, pepperoncini, and Italian sausage. This is the most popular pizza on the menu, and for good reason. The homemade sauce, the combination of toppings, and the quality of ingredients make this one hard to beat.

The Jimmy Conway Sandwich: Named after the iconic Goodfellas character, this is a fan favorite that keeps people coming back.

The Uncle Tony Italian Sub: Named after Lisa's favorite uncle, this sub is packed with salami, pepperoni, mortadella, prosciutto, provolone, lettuce, tomatoes, black olives, pepperoncini, and dressed with balsamic and olive oil. No mayo. Just a traditional Italian sub done right.

The Sleeper Pick: Lisa recommends trying The Giuliana, named after her daughter's middle name. It features pepperoni, salami, pepperoncini, cheese, and jalapenos for a little kick. Lisa says people absolutely love this sandwich for its savory, slightly spicy flavor.

The Stories Behind the Menu: Rat Pack, Family Names, and Goodfellas

One of the first things you will notice when you walk into The Sandwich Mafia and look at the menu board is the creative naming. Every item on the menu has a story.

Lisa grew up listening to Rat Pack music. Her father was a singer who loved Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra, and that love of the Rat Pack era runs through the entire family. Many menu items carry family names: Frankie's Pastrami is named after a cousin in Ohio. Aunt Teresa honors Lisa's grandmother's sister. Nana's Sub is, of course, named for Nana. The Fortunato Pizza is named after Lisa's great-grandfather.

And because Lisa's favorite movie is Goodfellas (thanks to her love of Ray Liotta), you will also find sandwiches named after characters like Henry Hill and Jimmy Conway. It is a menu that tells a family story, and that personal touch is part of what makes dining here feel so special.

The Art and Atmosphere: Murals by Local Artist Michael Young

When you step inside The Sandwich Mafia, take a moment to look around. The decor is intentional and personal, and the centerpiece is the artwork by local Estes Park muralist Michael Young. Michael is known throughout the community for his murals at locations across town, his involvement in local theater, and his role as director of the Catch the Glow Parade.

Lisa chose artists who meant something to her and incorporated both of her parents into the artwork. The murals capture their personalities in a way that makes you feel like you know them, even if you never had the chance to meet them. Be sure to head upstairs when you visit. In addition to the Rat Pack-themed artwork, the murals on the wall are something truly special.

Community Spirit: The Restaurant Family of Estes Park

One of the most surprising things Lisa discovered after opening The Sandwich Mafia was the supportive community among Estes Park restaurant owners. She describes it as a restaurant family where owners lend each other food, visit each other's businesses, and genuinely celebrate when someone else does well.

That collaborative spirit is one of the things that makes Estes Park's dining scene so special. When everybody does well, everybody does well. And when you see other restaurant owners eating at a particular spot, you know you have made a good choice.
