Experience the Annual Estes Park Duck Race: Fun, Community, and Giving Back

Hey everyone, Jeff and Julie Abel here from Estes Park Living with the Signature Home Team! We’re excited to give you an inside look at one of the most anticipated events in Estes Park: the annual Duck Race. This beloved tradition marks the start of the season for locals and is a must-experience for visitors. Let’s dive into what makes this event so special.

The Annual Tradition

Each year, the Estes Park Noon Rotary hosts the Duck Race, a signature event that’s more than just fun—it’s a major community fundraiser. The race starts at the Wapiti Restaurant, where around 10,000 ducks are dropped into the river. It’s an incredible sight to see a ‘flock’ of rubber ducks floating down the river, cheered on by hundreds of spectators. This year’s grand prize? A whopping $10,000!

How It Works

Participants purchase ducks, with each $5 duck supporting local nonprofits. Out of every purchase, $23 goes to a designated charity in the Estes Valley. It’s a fun way to contribute to meaningful causes while enjoying a lively day out. This year, we supported the Estes Park Learning Place, an educational nonprofit offering services like homework assistance, GED prep, and scholarships.

The Excitement of Race Day

The Duck Race is held on the first Saturday in May, coinciding with another notable event—the Kentucky Derby. This dual celebration of racing makes the day even more unique. The race begins in downtown Estes Park, outside the Wheel Bar and along the river. Once the ducks are dropped, it takes about one to two hours for them to reach the finish line, depending on the river’s flow.

A Day of Community Connection

One of the things we love most about the Duck Race is seeing so many familiar faces. Before the busy summer season kicks in, this event brings locals together, offering a chance to reconnect and enjoy a beautiful spring day. Vendor stalls, many representing nonprofits, line the plaza, and businesses often hold sidewalk sales to mark their first big day of the season.

Family-Friendly Fun

If you’re visiting Estes Park, this event is perfect for families. Kids love watching the ducks as they float down the river, and there’s a palpable excitement as the first few cross the finish line. It’s not just about the race; it’s a full day of fun, filled with music, food, and community spirit.

Why We Support the Estes Park Learning Place

This year, we chose to support the Estes Park Learning Place, a nonprofit close to our hearts. The organization helps students and adults with academic needs, from homework help to credit recovery and GED preparation. It’s a vital resource that provides scholarships based on need, empowering individuals to achieve their educational goals.

Join the Fun Next Year

If you missed this year’s Duck Race, be sure to mark your calendar for next year. It’s a day of joy, connection, and giving back that embodies the best of Estes Park. And remember, if you ever have questions about living or real estate in the area, we’re here to help.
