Raven's Roast Coffee House: A Local's Guide to Estes Park's Favorite Coffee Shop
Raven's Roast Coffee House: A Local's Guide to Estes Park's Favorite Coffee Shop
Every mountain town has that one spot where the locals gather, where the baristas know your name, and where a Sunday morning feels exactly the way it should. In Estes Park, that place is Raven's Roast Coffee House. Tucked into the George Hix Riverside Plaza on Elkhorn Avenue, this Celtic-inspired coffee lounge has been a gathering place for the Estes Park community since 2013.
Julie Abel from Signature Home Team recently sat down with barista Daphne Parker to talk about what makes Raven's Roast so special. From the locally sourced coffee and expansive tea selection to the live music, art supplies, and welcoming atmosphere, there is a reason this shop has earned a devoted following among Estes Park residents and visitors alike.
From the Old Church Shops to Elkhorn Avenue
Longtime Estes Park locals may remember Raven's Roast from its original home upstairs in the Old Church Shops. About four years ago, owner Shannon made the decision to move the shop to a ground-level location on Elkhorn Avenue. The result has been a transformation in accessibility and energy.
"Being on the ground level is obviously a big change for us," Daphne shared. "We get a lot more of the older locals coming in, or people with mobility challenges. If you have a wheelchair or a stroller with your kid, we see a lot more families here now."
While the new space is the same square footage as the original location, the layout feels entirely different. Large windows flood the shop with natural light, creating an open, inviting atmosphere that the Old Church Shops' upstairs location simply could not offer. As Daphne put it, "We get to photosynthesize in the sunlight. It feels a lot more open."
The Coffee: Locally Roasted, Next-Level Quality
At the heart of Raven's Roast is its coffee, and the team takes quality seriously. The shop partners with First Crack, a micro roastery that supplies both the espresso and drip coffee. According to Daphne, the partnership is a point of pride: "They make really high-quality coffee. We use them for our espresso and for our drip coffee, and their coffee tastes amazing."
Beyond the coffee itself, Raven's Roast is known for its impressive selection of syrups and flavor options. With dozens of syrup varieties available, including a wide range of sugar-free options, the baristas are constantly creating new combinations and seasonal specialties. If you have dietary preferences or are watching your sugar intake, you will find plenty to choose from here.
A Tea Lover's Destination
Raven's Roast is not just a coffee shop. It is also a serious tea destination. The shop carries an extensive selection of loose leaf teas sourced locally, spanning every major category:
• Black teas
• Green teas
• Herbal teas
• White teas
• Oolong teas
The white and oolong options are a standout, as Daphne noted: "That's not something I see at a lot of coffee shops nowadays." Regular tea-drinking locals have told the staff that they could order a different tea every day and never run out of options. For tea lovers visiting or moving to Estes Park, Raven's Roast should be at the top of your list.
The Vibe: Celtic Roots, Art Nouveau Soul
Walk into Raven's Roast and you will notice the atmosphere right away. The shop has a distinct Celtic and Art Nouveau aesthetic that reflects owner Shannon's artistic sensibility. A striking mural by local artist Michael Young anchors the space, and art books line the shelves near the fireplace. The entire shop feels like a curated creative space, not a cookie-cutter chain.
Michael Young is one of Estes Park's most prolific muralists, with nearly 30 murals displayed at businesses throughout town. His work at Raven's Roast adds to the shop's one-of-a-kind character and connects it to the broader arts culture in Estes Park.
The creative energy is not limited to the decor. Raven's Roast provides art supplies and stationery for patrons, inviting visitors to sit at the bar, write, sketch, or simply spend a few hours soaking in the atmosphere. Whether you are working remotely, journaling, or meeting a friend, the space encourages you to slow down and stay a while.
A Gathering Place for All
What truly sets Raven's Roast apart is its commitment to being a welcoming space for everyone. The shop hosts a queer coloring night on the first Sunday of every month, creating a safe and affirming gathering for members of the LGBTQ+ community. It is one of several regular events that reflect the shop's inclusive, community-first philosophy.
"We see a lot of locals from the LGBTQ+ community who come here, and it's kind of like a safe space for them," Daphne explained. "We see them coming back a lot, and then just fun, quirky people. We all really appreciate each other's individuality."
That spirit of welcome extends to every interaction. Daphne described the daily experience of meeting visitors from around the world: "People come in with their stories from all over the world, and we just get to collect different people's life experiences since we get to talk to so many different people here in Estes Park."
Live Music: From Celtic to Country to Jazz
Raven's Roast is also a live music venue, hosting local artists who bring everything from Celtic fiddle tunes to folk and country to jazz. Regular performers include Estes Park favorites like Cowboy Brad Fitch, a singer-songwriter who specializes in folk and western music, and Greg Miles, a local watercolor artist and musician known for his genre-hopping sets. Celtic musicians also perform regularly, filling the shop with the fiddle, guitar, and flute music that fits the shop's aesthetic perfectly.
Shannon's taste in overhead music also gets high marks. As Julie noted during the interview, Raven's Roast has "the absolute best playlist in all of Estes Park." Between the live performances and the curated background music, the soundtrack at Raven's Roast is as carefully considered as the coffee.
Seasonal Menus and Current Favorites
Raven's Roast rotates its drink menu with the seasons, and the baristas clearly enjoy the creative process. At the time of this spotlight, the spring menu featured some standout offerings:
• Lavender Haze Matcha: A matcha latte with lavender syrup, topped with real lavender flowers. Daphne reported it has been the most popular drink on the spring menu so far.
• Cherry Blossom Red Bull Dirty Soda: A new addition introducing dirty sodas to the Raven's Roast lineup, garnished with real cherry blossoms.
The seasonal creativity, combined with the extensive syrup selection and quality base ingredients, means there is always something new to try, no matter how often you visit.
Hours and Visiting Tips
Raven's Roast adjusts its hours with the seasons:
• Off-season: 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily
• Summer: 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM daily
One local tip: come early, especially during the summer months. The shop gets busy, and the morning hours are the best time to grab a seat and settle in. Be sure to follow Raven's Roast on Instagram (@ravensroast) for updates on seasonal menus, events, and live music schedules.
Why Locals Love Raven's Roast
When asked what sets Raven's Roast apart, Daphne's answer was simple: "The people who work here." She commutes from Longmont specifically because of her connection with owner Shannon and the team. "All of our baristas are so talented. We're all really big coffee nerds, and I think it helps our work."
For Jeff and Julie Abel, Raven's Roast is their "third place," their Sunday morning tradition and a cornerstone of their weekly routine. That kind of loyalty is not manufactured. It is earned through consistent quality, genuine warmth, and the kind of atmosphere that makes you feel at home the moment you walk through the door.
Whether you are a longtime Estes Park resident, a recent transplant, or visiting for the first time, Raven's Roast Coffee House is the kind of place that reminds you why small, locally owned businesses are the heartbeat of a mountain community.
